February 8, 2018: One Week Out!

We are one week away from House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi being the keynote speaker for the 2018 Johnson, Rayburn, Richards (JRR) dinner on Friday, February, 16th at the Marriott Marquis (1777 Walker St). We are very excited to host her.

Individual tickets are now on sale for the dinner and you can purchase them here. The JRR After Party, hosted by the Harris County Young Democrats and Houston Stonewall Young Democrats, is coming back with a vengence this year and you don’t want to miss out. Purchase a ticket today!

We will be looking for JRR dinner volunteers. Sign up here if you are interested in giving a helping hand for this great event.

Where: Marriott Marquis (1777 Walker St, Houston, TX 77010)

When: Friday, February 16th 7 - 9PM (Dinner) 9PM - MIDNIGHT (After Party)

For the month of February, the Party’s Town Talk will be centered around Black History and perspective. We have gathered together a panel of black publicly elected officials and community leaders to discuss a variety of issues.

The panel discussion is centered around engaging the black community, the importance of Black history, Civil Rights, civically engaging young African Americans, address how black people have consistently been the base of the democratic party and most consistent voting block, your experiences in life and how important it is to Get Out the Vote to preserve important values we all hold.

Join us as we take a trip down memory lane!

What: Town Talk: The Black Perspective
When: Wednesday, February 28th at 7PM
Where: Ensemble Theatre (3535 Main St. Houston, Texas 77002)

Moderators: Kandice Webber and Christian Menefee

Panelists: Rep. Alma Allen, Commissioner Rodney Ellis, Rev. William A. Lawson and many more to come.

We’d also like to send our condolences to the family of Lady Emma Primas, the oldest Democrat in Houston, who passed away at 112 years old.

Lady Emma had voted in every election since she was 19, overcoming obstacles such as poll taxes and other hindrances in the way. In 2015, she was able to meet the first black president this country has ever elected in Barack Obama and was one of the oldest living Texans.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said Lady Emma was, “an African American woman who lived a life worthy of praise, who was raised in and survived the segregation of the Deep South and never thought she would live to meet an African American president and first lady.”

The funeral will be Feb. 10 at The Community of Faith Church, 1024 Pinemont Drive, in Houston. The viewing begins at 10 a.m. followed by the service at noon.

The Harris County Democratic Party is in full swing with the upcoming Primary election, as voting starts in less than 3 weeks. Our main focus at the moment is following up with all of our Democratic neighbors who’ve been mailed an application to Vote By Mail (VBM) by the Texas Democratic Party.

There are 135,000 voters mailed a VBM application who need to be followed up with. We would like to thank our amazing volunteers, candidates, Clubs and Organizations, and Precinct Chairs who’ve helped engage these voters so far!

We still have to speak with voters who haven’t been contacted to and need your help to call them. Choose a phonebank to attend and bring your laptop, cell phone, and family or friends with you when you come by and have fun at the Party!
