Las Vegas Reminds Us, We Need More Action From The GOP On Gun control

As we woke up this morning to the horrific news coming out of Las Vegas, our hearts were heavy with thoughts and prayers for the families of the 50+ people dead and the 500+ injured. This was the deadliest mass shooting in American history. This act of senseless terrorism should not go unnoticed.

No one should suffer through the pain these families are going through. We ask for thoughts and prayers but we recognize the need for action and change for these acts of domestic terrorism to dissipate and go away. The House is moving forward with a vote on a gun-lobby backed bill to deregulate the sale of gun silencers. This bill, if passed would make it harder to detect the origin of gunshots.

The Sportsmen Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act (SHARE ACT) would eliminate silencers from the list of items regulated. The National Firearms Act of 1934 created this list and silencers are regulated because they are labeled as strictly machine guns and short-barreled rifles.

Houston Texans and the NFL Join The Resistance Movement Against Trump

On Friday, the President of the United States waged a full on assault on the first amendment and constitutional rights of NFL athletes across the country.

At a campaign rally in Alabama, the president echoed these sentiments about NFL players protesting the anthem before the game:

"Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a b—— off the field right now. Out. He's fired. He's fired!”

This is unacceptable behavior coming from the Commander-in-Chief and diminishes the stature the Office of the Presidency garners. The President is wrong and players around the league not only expressed their displeasure of his comments on social media Saturday but showed unity and solidarity Sunday when the anthem was played.

These players are protesting the injustices continually shown across America every day especially against marginalized communities. This isn't about a flag or the anthem, but about basic human rights for individuals living in this country. It seems this president still doesn't understand that.

This is a time for civil discourse of how we can become a more united country, not a time to become more divisive. When you see the statements made by the NFL commissioner and owners and images of unity displayed on Sunday by the players, you can see they understand this concept.

Here at the Harris County Democratic Party, we encourage everyone to listen and engage in open dialogue. This is how progress is made and how we become a stronger country, together.

HARRIS COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY OFFICIAL EVENTS & OPPORTUNITIES

One of the major goals here at the Harris County Democratic Party is to engage Democratic voters. Reaching out to voters at a community phone bank with a specific call to action is one of the simplest ways to achieve this goal, whether it be asking voters to become HCDP volunteers or to call their Republican Congressman or to attend a blockwalk. Phone banking is a vitally important Democratic activity and we need your help to do this.

Additionally, the best and quickest way to learn about phone banks, blockwalks, fun events, and other information from the Party is to follow + like the Harris County Democratic Party Facebook Page.

HOW TO BECOME A PRECINCT CHAIR

So, are you interested in being a precinct chair? Here are the steps you will need to take:

    1. Find out what precinct you’re in:
    2. See if there is currently a precinct chair for your precinct HERE
    3. If there is not a precinct chair currently listed for your precinct and you would like to step up and make a difference, begin the process by contacting your county’s Democratic Party (see HOUSTON AREA DEMOCRATIC PARTIES section above for links)

    WHO REPRESENTS ME?

In these difficult political times, it is crucial to know not just who represents you in Congress and the Texas Legislature, but also how to contact that person’s office. As a constituent, you are their employer and it is your right to let your opinion be known about legislation.

Obviously the first step is identifying who exactly represents you. You should keep handy the contact information for your two US Senators, your US Congressional Member, your State Senator, and your State Representative. There are several sites that can perform this service for you, but here are my recommendations:

    1. Who Represents Me (maintained by the Texas Legislature)
    2. Who Are My Representatives (maintained by Politiwatch)
    3. Find Your Elected Officials (maintained by Common Cause)
    4. Find Your Reps
    5. Contacting Congress (Members of Congress only)

Each of these services should provide you with a link to each representative’s webpage that contains contact information.

    HCDP Values Statement

    A Message From Lillie Schechter:

What happened early this morning on the Senate floor was nothing short of amazing. For now, Trumpcare is dead, and the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. The three Republican Senators who joined the Democrats to kill the bill, deserve some thanks for doing the right thing, but it is the Democratic Party that should get the praise. For over a generation, Democrats have drawn a line in the sand on this issue. Healthcare is a right that all American's deserve.  When we stand together with one voice, we win. …

    Article Synopsis

Sorry for the late email; we’ve been working all day in the office on some housekeeping items, meeting with the staff/volunteers, and planning events. Yesterday, the County Executive Committee met at the IBEW Local Union 716 building to select a new County Party Chair. After voting concluded on the first ballot, I was elected Chair! Thanks to everyone that participated in the HCDP Chair replacement election yesterday and thank you to all our newly sworn in Precinct Chairs!

I’m ready to get to work building a transparent, fair and inclusive Party. I am super excited about things to come and am looking forward to working with all of you! See below for a list of upcoming events at the headquarters and volunteer deputy  registrar trainings in the county this week:
