MeTooMixer Empowerment through Empathy
Venue:
Poison Girl Cocktail Lounge, 1641 Westheimer Rd suite B, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

It made my heart swell to see women using this idea – one that we call ‘empowerment through empathy’ to not only show the world how widespread and pervasive sexual violence is, but also to let other survivors know they are not alone. The point of the work we’ve done over the last decade with the ‘me too movement’ is to let women, particularly young women of colour know that they are not alone – it’s a movement. ~ Tarana Burke

Women all over our country have bravely shared stories of sexual harrasment, abuse and assualt. Many found the courage to share because it is important to not only amplify the prevalance of sexual abuse in America but to let others know, they are not alone.

Houston Rising is hosting Houston's first #MeTooMixer to continue to build the connection, in real life, that started on social media. This mixer is 100% INCLUSIVE TO ALL and provides a space where we can meet and get to know each other. Your interactions can be as light or a deep as you choose. It is all up to you!

Fine details:
Light snacks will be served
$2 wells and $3 draft beers
Full bar available at regular price

*Alll functions, events and gatherings sponsored by Houston Rising are inclusive of all individuals. We do not discriminate based on color, race, religion, gender, gender identity, immigration status, religion or lack of thereof any violation of this core belief will not be tolerated.

Young Professionals: The Rise & Fall of America's Highest Office
Venue:
The Tasting Room, 1101 Uptown Park Blvd, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

Young Professionals --- "The Impossible Presidency: The Rise and Fall of America's Highest Office"

In The Impossible Presidency, celebrated historian Jeremi Suri charts the rise and fall of the American presidency, from the limited role envisaged by the Founding Fathers to its current status as the most powerful job in the world. He argues that the presidency is a victim of its own success-the vastness of the job makes it almost impossible to fulfill the expectations placed upon it. As managers of the world’s largest economy and military, contemporary presidents must react to a truly globalized world in a twenty-four-hour news cycle. There is little room left for bold vision.

Suri traces America’s disenchantment with our recent presidents to the inevitable mismatch between presidential promises and the structural limitations of the office. A masterful reassessment of presidential history, this book is essential reading for anyone trying to understand America’s fraught political climate.

His book The Impossible Presidency: The Rise and Fall of America's Highest Office will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

Indivisible Houston October General Meeting - ACA Enrollment
Venue:
The Montrose Center, 401 Branard St, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

We've been on the frontline for the fight to save the ACA and we still have work to do.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) enrollment period has been shortened (from 3 months to 6 weeks) and funding to advertise the deadlines has been cut by 90%. Spending on in-person enrollment assistance is also set to be cut by 41 percent from 2016 levels. This is another way the Trump administration and GOP are trying to kill the ACA.

Our October meeting will feature a discussion about how the ACA
enrollment process works and what we can all do to make sure that everyone who needs the ACA can access the information they need to have healthcare in the upcoming year.

We will hear from experts on the frontline of these efforts. Our speakers will include:

Melissa McChesney, Center for Public Policy Priorities
Aurora Harris, Young Invincibles

Melissa is a Houston-based independent consultant for the Center for Public Policy Priorities. Melissa has worked extensively on both policy and practice related to outreach and enrollment into the marketplace, Medicaid, and CHIP. Since joining the Center in 2015 she has provided policy analysis, training, and troubleshooting to enrollment assisters across the state of Texas. Prior to joining the Center she worked as a Senior Policy Analyst for the Texas Health and Human Services Commission on the team that implemented eligibility changes to the Medicaid and CHIP programs required by the ACA.

Aurora serves as the Partnerships Manager for Young Invincibles’ Southern Office, where she acts as the main liaison between grasstops partners and organizing work and strategy—ensuring that young people’s voices and experiences are represented within local and statewide discussions related to policy change and service provision.

Since 2013, Aurora Harris has been both a champion and beneficiary of the ACA, mobilizing marginalized communities to enroll in health care plans and use their voices in the healthcare debate. She served as a Health Center Advocacy Organizer for Planned Parenthood – Gulf Coast, where she engaged and navigated uninsured people, including herself, through the Health Insurance Marketplace during the ACA’s first open enrollment period.

During her tenure at the Lesbian Health Initiative, she became an Affordable Care Act LGBT consumer representative for White House Health and Human Services Secretary Burwell and Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy. Working with the Center for American Progress, she became an essential voice for the “Hear the Nine” campaign that highlighted how a Supreme Court ruling in King v. Burwell against the ACA would have real-life impacts on LGBT Americans across the country.

See you on the 29th.

DTPA Update with Joe Longley

Joe K. Longley is the 2017-2018 State Bar of Texas president-elect. Longley will serve as president of the State Bar of Texas from June 2018 to June 2019. Longley has been prolific throughout his legal career in helping pass laws that benefit lawyers and their clients.

“THE NUMBER ONE ENEMY OF THE FINE PRINT”
That’s how Joe Longley's skills have been referred to for over three decades—and not without good cause. In 1973, as the 29 year-old Chief of the Antitrust & Consumer Protection Division of the Texas Attorney General’s Office, he co-authored and nurtured the passage of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act, together with the private remedies sections of Article 21.21 (now Chapter 541) of the Texas Insurance Code.the Texas Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, the Texas Home Solicitation Act, and landlord-tenant protections. Since then, he has co-authored Chapters 542 (prompt pay) and 544 (unfair discrimination) of the Insurance Code, the Texas Fair Debt Collections Practices Act, the Texas Home Solicitation Act, and landlord-tenant protections.

These Texas laws have been hailed nationwide as some of the strongest consumer protection measures ever passed by any legislature, anywhere.

His practice, both as a solo practitioner and as a partner in the firm of Longley & Maxwell, LLP (1979-2004), has focused on helping those victimized by consumer fraud and bad faith insurance practices. He has also found time to author numerous articles and seminar papers; teach insurance law as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law; Co-author Texas’ leading consumer law text, Texas Consumer Litigation, and serve his profession as a Director of the State Bar of Texas; a member of the District 9 Grievance Committee, and Chairman of the State Bar’s Consumer Law Section.

In 2000, he and his law partner, Philip Maxwell, were named to the Texas Lawyer’s exclusive list of 100 LEGAL LEGENDS. Since then he has been named by the Texas Lawyer as the Number One Go-To-Lawyer for Insurance Law in the State of Texas. In 2004, the Texas Legislative Reference Library established the Longley-Maxwell Deceptive Trade Practices Act Collection: Legislative Archive 1973-2001. In 2011, he was selected to receive the State Bar Insurance Section's Insurance Legal Legend Award.

Longley has authored numerous seminar papers, taught insurance law at the University of Texas School of Law, and served on the State Bar of Texas Board of Directors, the District 9 Grievance Committee, and as chair of the State Bar Consumer Law Section, now called the Consumer and Commercial Law Section.

One-Day Regional Conference - Leading Into The Future: Creating Opportunities for AAPI Women Across Communities
Saturday, November 4, 2017
Houston Community College
3100 Main Street
8am – 7pm

Critical to effective 21st-century leadership is the ability to promote whole person leadership – leadership that balances one’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and that lays the foundation from which individuals are able to both influence and make a difference. Understanding trends and forecasts, as well as challenges and opportunities, equips leaders to develop this type of foundation and strategic vision.

Join us on Saturday, November 4, 2017, for an interactive, dialogue-driven, one-day regional conference in partnership with Houston Community College. The conference will include presentations and discussions highlighting the trends, challenges, and opportunities facing AAPI women today, offer skills-building and networking opportunities, and spotlight regional activities that are making an impact in the AAPI community and beyond.

Participants will leave the conference energized with new ideas and strategies to better serve their organizations and communities. The conference is open to participants from all sectors, including corporate, non-profit, government, and academia. An evening reception and marketplace will begin at 5pm, immediately following the afternoon workshops. Information about the agenda can be found at www.apawomen.org.

Thank you to our host committee and corporate partners: Houston Community College, Titan Management, Cole Chemical, Southwest Airlines, State Farm, Walmart, and Coca-Cola.

Jared Yates Sexton - The People Are Going To Rise Like The Waters
Venue:
Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet St, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

Join Indivisible Houston as we welcome author and political commentator Jared Yates Sexton for a discussion of this precarious moment in our national politics and the inspiration for his new book The People Are Going to Rise Like the Waters Upon Your Shore.

$10 Suggested Donation

“Essential reading for understanding this country now and going forward.” —Alexander Chee, author of The Queen of the Night.

When he agreed to cover the 2016 election season, journalist Jared Yates Sexton didn’t know he was stepping into what would become—for both political parties—the most rageful and divisive political circus in U.S. history. His initial dispatches showed Democrats at war with their establishment, coming apart at the seams over the long-gestating ascendancy of Hillary Clinton and the upstart momentum of Bernie Sanders, whose grassroots campaign provoked uprisings of people desperate for change. Then, on June 14, Sexton attended a Donald Trump rally in Greensboro, North Carolina. One of the first journalists to witness these rallies and give mainstream readers an idea of the raw anger that occurred there, Sexton found himself in the center of a maelstrom. Following a series of tweets that saw his observations viewed well over 1 million times, his reporting was soon featured in The Washington Post, NPR, Bloomberg, and Mother Jones, and he would go on to write two pieces for The New York Times. Sexton gained more than 18,000 followers on Twitter in a matter of days, and received online harassments, campaigns to get him fired from his university professorship, and death threats that changed his life forever.

The People Are Going to Rise Like the Waters Upon Your Shore is a firsthand account of the events that shaped the 2016 presidential election and the cultural forces that divided both parties and powered Donald Trump into the White House. Featuring in-the-field reports as well as deep analysis, Sexton’s book is not just the story of the most unexpected and divisive election in modern political history. It is also a sobering chronicle of our democracy’s political polarization—a result of our self-constructed, technologically assisted echo chambers.

Like the works of Hunter S. Thompson and Norman Mailer—books that have paved the way for important narratives that shape how we perceive not only the politics of our time but also our way of life—The People Are Going to Rise Like the Waters Upon Your Shore is an instant classic, an authoritative depiction of a country struggling to make sense of itself.

2017 Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award Ceremony
Venue:
Rothko Chapel, 3900 Yupon St, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

Rothko Chapel's bi-annual Óscar Romero Award--named after Archbishop Óscar Romero of San Salvador who was assassinated on March 24, 1980 because of his vocal opposition to the violent oppression of his fellow citizens--has been given every two years since 1987 in recognition of courageous, grassroots human rights advocacy. Building upon the topic of ending mass incarceration addressed at our 2017 Spring Symposium, the Chapel will honor two recipients, one internationally and the other locally selected, for this year's recognition.

The international awardee is Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, Executive Director of Association for the Protection of Prisoners and Human Rights in Burundi, east Africa. The local awardee is Kathryn Griffin Griñán, a Recovery Coach & Peer-To-Peer Counselor at Been There, Done That in Houston, Texas. The public award ceremony will take place on November 12, 2017 at 3pm in the Rothko Chapel, with a reception to follow on the plaza. This ceremony will honor both recipients' courage while recognizing the vital importance of their work. Translation services sponsored by MasterWord Services, Inc..

About the Awardees:

Pierre Claver Mbonimpa is the executive director of Association pour la Protection des Droits Humains et des Personnes Détenues (Association for the Protection of Prisoners and Human Rights – APRODH), an organization that documents and reports on human rights violations with an emphasis on those committed against incarcerated people in Burundi where its citizens face alarming insecurity and violence. He has been imprisoned and faced an assassination attempt after challenging the government's many abuses, including sexual violence, torture, and violations committed against incarcerated people.

Kathryn Griffin Griñán's road to recovery led her to the re-entry program in the Harris County Sheriff's Office jail where she provides direct service and counseling to victims of sex trafficking, while advocating for rehabilitation and community support versus incarceration.

Lies into Laws Campus Forum at UH
Venue:
UH Student Center Theater, 455 University Dr., Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

Texas lawmakers are turning lies into laws

This year, state lawmakers claimed to protect religious freedom when they allowed discrimination against LGBTQ Texans. They claimed to stand for women’s safety when they attacked transgender people. They claimed to use scientific evidence when they passed another unnecessary abortion restriction. They claimed that requiring unconstitutional policing of immigrant communities was about public safety.

All of these legislative measures had one goal: to turn a lie into a law.

Texas Rising is calling out the lies. Join us at UH to hear from movement experts about the impact of turning lies into laws and how we can resist and build power to create change.

Nov. Mtg: Jeff Lindner - Meteorologist for Harris County #Harvey
Venue:
Fadi's Meyerland Mediterranean Grill, 4738 Beechnut St, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

Meyerland Area Democrats:

Our Monday, November 20 meeting will feature a hero from Harvey -- Jeff Lindner -- meteorologist for Harris County Flood Control. He gained local and national attention giving moment-by-moment updates on bayou levels and taking questions. His twitter following soared. A GoFundMe effort raised tens of thousands of dollars so he could take a vacation!

Joining the Harris County Flood Control District in 2004 as the District’s first meteorologist is one of many precedents set by Jeff Lindner. In his primary role as manager of the District’s Flood Watch Program, Jeff implements regular communication with the National Weather Service and the Harris County Office of Emergency Management (HCOEM) during times of flooding while monitoring 140 rainfall and stage gauges and collecting data at over 400 bridges located on many of Harris County’s 2,500 miles of channel. In addition he oversees the operation of the Harris County Flood Warning System and the Regional Flood ALERT Partners group as well as establishing flood levels for all 140 gauge sites in Harris County. Jeff also held the Regional Coordinator for CoCoRaHS for six years in southeast Texas and has developed multiple presentations and preparedness materials on hurricane impacts, flooding, and drought and how to prepare and respond to these weather episodes. Jeff holds a Bachelor of Science degree in meteorology from Texas A&M University. He is a member of the national and local chapters of the American Meteorological Society and of the Texas Gulf Coast Emergency Managers Association, the National Hydrological Warning Council, Texas Flash Flood Coalition, and ALERT Users Group.

We will also ask HISD V runoff candidates to appear to make short statements to the group.

Venue:
JW Marriott Houston, 5150 Westheimer Road, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

Camp United Nations for Girls is a political leadership program that introduces girls ages 9 to 15 to international politics and the work of the United Nations. The program begins with a lesson on the history of the United Nations and its purpose. This is followed by an explanation of the structure, leadership and the rules of procedure of the United Nations starting with the General Assembly and subsidiary organs. Participants learn about the specific work undertaken in the United Nations’ boards, commissions, committees, councils and panels and working groups. Prior to convening the General Assembly, each participant will be assigned a country, guided through researching her country and solving geopolitical challenges in regional work groups. When the General Assembly convenes delegates will give speeches, negotiate with other delegates, caucus and propose resolutions along with amendments before finally voting. All activities will be guided by a camp counselor in small working groups of delegates. Girl Scouts participating in Camp United Nations for Girls will earn a Girl Scouts Global Action Award.

Camp United Nations for Girls is ideal for girls with an interest in politics. The delegate fee is $160. The Girl Scout delegate fee is $120. The delegate fee covers all program materials and meals. This carefully curated theatrical event features a primarily local lineup of men and women whose stories will enlighten and ultimately uplift viewers as well as contextualize the hotly debated issue of abortion.

Wade abortion story and Dr. Willie Parker, a black Southern Baptist abortion provider and emerging leader of the reproductive rights movement, sharing how he went from being against providing abortions to feeling it is his religious duty to do so.
