On Saturday, February 16th Transform Houston is hosting an NDO (Nondiscrimination) Town Meeting.
Houston has a long and mixed history with the passage of LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections.
At the town meeting we will be discussing our city's need for an all inclusive nondiscrimination ordinance and the path to passing one.

This event is designed to provide information about current protections, who and what a new nondiscrimination law would cover and the various paths to achieve passage of a new Houston NDO.

Our Monday February 18th meeting will be about climate change, its impact on the world and Houston, what we can do about it and more.

Our speaker is Dr. Daniel Cohan. Daniel Cohan is an Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University. His research specializes in atmospheric modeling to inform environmental decision-making. In addition to his peer-reviewed publications, he writes for The Hill, The Conversation, and Houston Chronicle. Dr. Cohan received a B.A. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University, a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Chemistry from Georgia Tech, and served as a Fulbright Scholar to Australia. He is a recipient of an NSF CAREER award and was a member of the NASA Air Quality Applied Sciences Team.

Meeting Program: Pollinator Pathways.
Amanda Daly, the Houston Zoo’s Supervisor of Natural Encounters, will speak on the Prairie Pollinator Pathways program. First, she will cover pollinator information.

Some insects such as bees and butterflies as well as some mammals, reptiles, and birds are all pollinators.

The largest pollinator, a mammal, the Black and White Ruffled Lemur from Madagascar, measuring up to four feet from tip of nose to tip of tail, pollinates the Travelers Tree. In Africa, Spiny Mice pollinate the sugarbush plant, and Bush Babies pollinate the Baobab tree.

Reptiles, including certain geckos and skinks, are pollinators. The Blue-Tailed gecko pollinates the Trochetia flower, the national flower of Mauritius. In New Zealand, birds, bees, and more than 50 species of gecko pollinate the Christmas Tree.

The meeting was moved due to Valentine's Day being a day with friends and family.

For Commissioner Garcia, Precinct 2 has always been his and his family's home. He has a 35-year career in public service that began as a Houston Police Officer.

He was appointed by Mayor Lee Brown as Director of the Mayor’s Anti-Gang Office, was then elected to Houston City Council and appointed as chair of two City Council committees — the Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee and the Minority / Women Business Enterprise Committee.

With the support of his peers on City Council, he would be confirmed as Mayor Pro-Tem by Mayor Bill White.

Adrian continued his service by being elected to the office of Harris County Sheriff — the largest sheriff's office in Texas and the 3rd largest in the United States (source.- pct 2 website)

Peter A. Schey is the lead attorney in the ongoing class-action suit known as the Flores settlement, which dates to the late 1990s and sets detention standards for migrant children in federal custody.

Schey has received numerous awards, including, County of Los Angeles and League of United Latin-American Citizens commendation for dedicated service to the affairs of the Latino community in the U.S. (1996); Carol King Award for efforts "to secure justice for Salvadoran asylum seekers" (1988); Commendation for Pro Bono Services by State Bar of California (1986); Jack Wasserman Memorial Award by American Immigration Lawyers Association for "excellence in litigation" on behalf of immigrants (1985); Clarence Darrow Foundation Award for civil rights litigation (1980); Award for Outstanding Service to Hispanic Community by United California Mexican American Association (1980).

Mr. Schey received a BA in Psychology (with honors) from the University of California, Berkeley, CA, in 1969. He received his JD (with honors) from California Western School of Law, in San Diego, CA in 1973.

The CLE is free. Lunch is $30 if paid online in advance. $40 at the door. Credit card is the only form of payment accepted. Approved for 1 hour of MCLE.
