BAAD Women October Meeting

Venue:
Bay Area Community Center,
5002 E Nasa Parkway, Seabrook

Event Description:

Lina Hidalgo, candidate for Harris County Judge, and Steven Kirkland, judge and candidate for Texas Supreme Court Justice, Place 2, are the featured speakers at the meeting of the Bay Area Association of Democratic Women on Thursday, October 18.

Hidalgo wants to realign the county’s fiscal priorities to reflect their social values believing the politics currently do not align with those of our community. She will work to ensure that systems, services and programs are strengthened and delivered equitably. Kirkland is running because he believes justice demands the highest standards. He is concerned that our courts today are falling short and that too many judges have forgotten they serve the people not political parties.

Sherrie Matula, BAAD Women president, will discuss area activities to increase election turnout and provide an update on Sisters United’s efforts targeting Harris County Democratic women. There’s a lot at stake this election and we need to get these women to the polls this year. They don’t have a very good voting record, yet their vote can have a tremendous impact on the election results.

The meeting is at the Bay Area Community Center in Clear Lake Park, located at 5002 E. NASA Parkway (across the street from the lake) in Seabrook. It begins with light refreshments at 6:30 p.m. followed by the program at 7 p.m. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Do you want to get involved? You can help by encouraging fellow Democrats to vote in the upcoming election. All you have to do is schedule some time to make phone calls at the Bay Area Call Center at 926 Gemini, a half block behind the Krist Law Firm on El Camino Real. You are provided a script and training on an easy-to-use phone system. Contact John Cobarruvias at 281-536-2457 to volunteer. It’s a simple way for you, as a BAAD Women, to participate in efforts to Get Out The Vote. Hear more at the meeting on Thursday.

Join us for a special evening CLE on the legacy of Thurgood Marshall with Wil Haygood. He is also the author of The Butler: A Witness to History (2013). His King of the Cats: The Life and Times of Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., told the story of the enigmatic New York congressman and was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. That was followed—after publication of a family memoir—by In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis, Jr., which was awarded the ASCAP Deems Taylor Music Biography Award, the Zora Neale Hurston-Richard Wright Legacy Award, and the Nonfiction Book of the Year Award from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. In 2009, he wrote Sweet Thunder: The Life and Times of Sugar Ray Robinson, which told the story of the famed New York pugilist known as much for his prowess in the ring as his elegant style outside of it. Haygood is an associate producer of Lee Daniels’ The Butler.

Event Name:
Evening CLE with Wil Haygood

Venue:
St. Paul's United Methodist Church,
5501 S. Main St., Houston

Event Description:

HCDLA will host a reception beginning at 6:30pm before the CLE with Wil Haygood starting at 7pm in Fondren Hall at St. Paul's Methodist Church. Haygood is the author of Tigerland—an emotional, inspiring story of two teams from a poor, black, segregated high school in Ohio, who, in the midst of the racial turbulence of 1968/1969, win the Ohio state baseball and basketball championships in the same year. Approved for 1 hour of Texas Bar MCLE.

1968 and 1969: Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy are assassinated. Race relations are frayed like never before. Cities are aflame as demonstrations and riots proliferate. But in Columbus, Ohio, the Tigers of segregated East High School win the baseball and basketball championships, defeating bigger, richer, whiter teams across the state. Now, Wil Haygood gives us a spirited and stirring account of this improbable triumph and takes us deep into the personal lives of these local heroes: Robert Wright, power forward, whose father was a murderer; Kenny Mizelle, the Tigers’ second baseman, who grew up under the false impression that his father had died; Eddie “Rat” Ratleff, the star of both teams, who would play for the 1972 U.S. Olympic basketball team. We meet Jack Gibbs, the first black principal at East High; Bob Hart, the white basketball coach, determined to fight against the injustices he saw inflicting his team; the hometown fans who followed the Tigers to stadiums across the state. And, just as important, Haygood puts the Tigers’ story in the context of the racially charged late 1960s. The result is both an inspiring sports story and a singularly illuminating social history.

WIL HAYGOOD is currently a Visiting Distinguished Professor in the department of media, journalism, and film at Miami University, Ohio. For nearly three decades he was a journalist, serving as a national and foreign correspondent at The Boston Globe, where he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and then at The Washington Post. He is the author The Butler: A Witness to History; Showdown: Thurgood Marshall and the Supreme Court Nomination That Changed America; Sweet Thunder: The Life and Times of Sugar Ray Robinson; In Black and White: The Life of Sammy Davis, Jr; Two on the River; King of the Cats: The Life and Times of Adam Clayton Powell Jr.; and The Haygoods of Columbus: A Family Memoir. The Butler was later adapted into the critically acclaimed film directed by Lee Daniels, starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey. He has received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, and the 2017 Patrick Henry Fellowship Literary Award for his research on Tigerland. He lives in Washington, D.C.
