We are joining up with our friends at Swing Left TX District 07 to host a block walk in our area.

From our friends: "Block walking is easy and fun. Building teams of block walkers takes time. We need to have a well-oiled machine running by the time September rolls around.

So, join us for a neighborhood block walk to help roll the blue wave into Houston and get out the vote for the upcoming primaries! We will be talking to fellow progressives, asking them about their top issue priorities.

In the process, we'll be finding more volunteers to join us in building teams to get out as many voters as we possibly can for the March primaries and the November midterms.

Make sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes, as well as sunscreen.

In the past year we’ve been witnesses to the breakdown of democracy in our country. Everyday we’re bombarded with the sad state of political affairs in Washington D.C and here in Texas at the hands of our legislature. But we have resisted, and OUR movement of engaged citizenry gives us hope that we will win.

In 2018 we will see the greatest number of women running for office ever. This is YOUR year to put a record number of progressive women in office, and PSRH is committed to getting them there. Join us on Sunday February 18th from 2-5pm where you will have the opportunity to meet and get to know the progressive female-identifying candidates running in Harris county.

Film Screening - Tell Them We Are Rising: Story of HBCU's

Venue:
Ogun Art + Wine,
920 Studemont St, Suite 150, Houston

Event Description:

The rich history of America’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) began before the end of slavery, flourished in the 20th century, and profoundly influenced the course of the nation for over 150 years — yet remains largely unknown. With Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities, the latest documentary from Stanley Nelson (Black Panthers, Freedom Riders) and Marco Williams, the powerful story of the rise, influence, and evolution of HBCUs comes to life.

A haven for Black intellectuals, artists, and revolutionaries — and a path of promise toward the American dream — HBCUs have educated the architects of freedom movements and cultivated leaders in every field while remaining unapologetically Black for more than 150 years. These institutions have nurtured some of the most influential Americans of our time, from Booker T. Washington to Martin Luther King, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois to Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison to Oprah Winfrey, Alice Walker to Spike Lee to Common. A key driver of Black social, political and economic progress, HBCUs were also a place of unprecedented freedom for African American students and a refuge from the rampant racism that raged outside the campus walls. Tell Them We Are Rising captures this important history to tell the dynamic story of Americans who refused to be denied a higher education and — in their resistance — created a set of institutions that would influence and shape the landscape of the country for centuries to come.

A Special Film Screening: "Death By Delivery"

Event Description:

Join an array of expert panelists and stakeholders for a Houston’s premier screening of the riveting documentary, "Death By Delivery". The film documents award-winning journalist Nelafar Hedayat's awakening journey across the country to investigate why African American women are dying during childbirth , or shortly afterward delivery, at four times the rate of all other women in the United States. This eye-opening film reveals the systematic failures of our maternal health-care on a national level. A common theme of traumatizing births, near-death experiences, and desperate cries of self-advocacy, Black women in America are literally dying to become moms. We must come together to address the disparities in treatment. Help spread awareness as we tackle this health crisis and work to reverse this endemic.

Event Description:

HISD is considering handing over our Black and Brown schools to partners they know little about. Worthing, Kashmere, Wheatley, and other historic Black and Brown schools are at risk.

Unlike HISD, we want to provide a space for parents, teachers, students, and concerned community leaders to speak out!

Tell HISD not to bow down to TEA, to instead "stand up and fight back."

Our message is clear:
NO Partnerships. NO Charters. NO Closures..

NO Asociaciones. NO Escuelas autónomas. NO Cierres.

Event Description:

On Wednesday, February 21, we're gathering in front of the Harris County Commissioners Court to urge them to settle the bail lawsuit immediately! Already two federal courts have found that the county's practice of keeping people accused of minor crimes in jail because they can't afford to buy their freedom violates the Constitution. Just this week, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the judgement of a lower court. As the commissioners consider their next step, we want to remind them that we, their constituents, want them to stop wasting our tax money on defending this lawsuit and on jailing people because they're poor.

February is Black History Month and March 3rd is the March for Black Women. As we have seen in political movements both deep into the past and in recent months, the black community has led the way in the fight for justice and equity, and standing up against oppressive politicians and policies.

Join us to learn about the efforts of leaders in our community, how to get involved in those efforts on an ongoing basis, legislation and policies on the table that you can help weigh in on to affect change, and what to expect in the months and years ahead. In addition, this meeting will touch on coalition-building, accuracy in our history books, and both the impact this has on issues and elections.

Solidarity!

An Evening with Roy Zimmerman

Venue:
1370 N Millbend Dr, Spring, TX 77380-1562, United States,

Event Description:

Imagine the wit of Will Rogers and Samuel Clements mixed with Bob Dylan's musical abilities and you have a glimpse of Roy. If Gandhi had played guitar, grown hair and sung at the top of his lungs, he still wouldn't have had Roy Zimmerman's wicked sense of musical satire. On the other hand, Roy Zimmerman has never liberated a nation from a tyrannical oppressor. He's working on it though, one song at a time. Roy sings a compelling combination of socially conscious comedy and original music. It's Lenny Bruce meets Stephen Sondheim meets Phil Ochs in Brian Wilson's living room. Bring your social conscience and your sense of humor for this show.

Park in the surrounding area and find the cannabis signs, banners and flags. You won't miss us.

What to bring?
1. Signs supporting cannabis.
2. Flags supporting cannabis.
3. A bunch of people.

This is a walk to educate the public about the lack of cannabis freedom we have here in Texas and how to get active to change that. We want recreational use and medical use come 2019, no questions ask.

On walks, we pass out information to get people active in the fight to free the weed come 2019. We have literature, signs and flags to show our love and support for this amazing plant.

Our goal is to be so consistent and everywhere, so much that there is no ignoring this movement. We are going to have walks 2-3 times a week, all over the state, in many cities.

Anyone can be a part of this by simply organizing a walk in your area.

We are not affiliated with any political group or any organization. We are free individuals, people that come from all walks of life. We are fed up with the lack of cannabis freedom and we are here to do something about it.

Educate, love, lead by example.

Keynote speaker and honoree Isis Brantley

Isis, who was targeted by the State because of her widespread reputation as one of the best braiders in the state, was not intimidated. A firm believer of constitutional justice, Isis fought for what she believed was a violation of her civil rights by the state of Texas. Not one to back down from a adversity, Isis challenged the state and charged that the art of hair braiding had nothing to do with cosmetology and could not be taught in any existing schools of cosmetology at the time. Consequently, after countless meetings and conversations with state officials, Isis was ‘grandfathered’ in 2007 by the State of Texas and received the prestigious noted honor of being the first natural hair care expert in Texas.
