John Culberson Auctions Off America

Our representative Country Club Culberson voted to slash and burn American healthcare, education, and savings last week with one of the worst pieces of legislation ever to pass through the hallowed halls of Washington. We stand ABSOLUTELY opposed to Country Club Culberson, and are putting on an exhibit of his callousness Monday, December 11th during Rush Hourm right in front of his office, with a representational auction of America’s institutions and working class cash to the millionaires, billionaires, and mega-corporations that kickback payments to Country Club John, 45, and the rest of the GOP plutocrats responsible for the highway robbery known as the #TrumpTaxScam.

Join the resistance of TX-07 as John Culberson Auctions Off America.

December potluck, games, and silent auction
Venue:
Houston Sierra Club, 1805 west alabama, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

You are invited to our annual potluck, games and silent auction 12/14/17 from 7-9 in Pecore Hall of St Stephens Church at 1805 W Alabama near Woodhead. Free and open to the public. So come partake in fun, food and friendship.

We need help getting this fun event organized. So please consider making a donation to the auction and volunteer at the event.

DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We had such a blast last year at our holiday auction that we are bringing back our indoor snowball fight and environmental jeopardy.

Our auction, potluck, and games will take place this year at our December General Meeting on Thursday, December 14. This is one of the fundraising events for the Houston Group and usually features both a live and silent auction. All proceeds from the auction stay here in Houston to fund local conservation efforts and activities.

If you can, please bring a dish to share. However, if you cannot bring a dish, then come anyway. The more the merrier. We'll have a sign up for potluck dishes at our upcoming November meeting. If you miss the sign up, you can still bring a dish to pass.

We are seeking donations for auction items. An early response will help us publicize items in advance. Suggestions for donations are: goods such as camping equipment, sports equipment, tools, crafts, artwork, or autographed books; nature tours or adventure activities; gift certificates or gift cards for services, performances, merchants, or restaurants; stays at cabins, bed & breakfasts, or resorts.

We also need volunteers to help solicit auction items, pick up donated items or help promote and advertise the event. And we will need volunteers on the day of the event to help with a variety of setup tasks.

Visit our newsletter to find out how to get involved.

Event Name:
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's 23rd Annual Toys For Kids
Venue:
George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas, Houston Google Maps
Event Description:

#WeAreHoustonStrong...
This year, Houston was devastated by one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the United States in a decade. Hurricane Harvey, produced searing images of men, women, and children trapped on rooftops, waiting to be rescued from their homes by boat or helicopter. And while the first priority of parents is putting a roof over their heads and providing food, the youngest victims of this natural disaster have needs that don't come into play. This is the time to comfort and begin the healing process for, not just our children, but our entire community, particularly those who have experienced a very traumatizing event like Hurricane Harvey.
“Toys for the Kids” offers our community an opportunity to lift the hearts and spirits of underprivileged and minority children and their families. This year, now more than ever, we want to bring joy and cheer in an otherwise very stressful time for the effected families in our community.

Over five thousand children attend the event. With a large number of attendees, the event takes place at Houston’s George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston. The event begins as early as 10 AM. Weeks prior to the event, volunteers gather to coordinate event operations as well as wrap as many as thousands of gifts. Our faithful volunteers show exceptional honor in wrapping and preparing for the event. They spend countless hours setting up and breaking down prior and after the event. Volunteers take their great pride in also being a part of the event. These volunteers donate their time to help share the spirit of the holiday season to those that cannot. It is a time that all can call, “Tis the Season to be Jolly.”
The event typically includes a grand parade entrance, food and refreshments, a moon bounce, and entertainment from local singers or groups. The morning starts with thousands of children waiting in excitement as well as those that would like to meet the Congresswoman. The parade highlights Congresswoman Sheila Jackson along with Mr. & Mrs. Clause and other dignitaries that donate their time and support to the event. Bands honor the parade and event with joyful music to set the holiday season into place and following the parade, the Congresswoman speaks about the good deeds of the day. The idea is to remind others that their generosity shares blessing with those less fortunate so they can experience the joy of the holiday season. Every year is a successful year, which not only brings the community together, but reaches out to those that want to share their holiday spirit.
At the close of the event, children leave with smiles that can never be forgotten. Children bring home toys that they happily unwrapped at the event. Our annual event relies on volunteers, donations, time, and the kind consideration of the community.
Our continued efforts to keep our annual, “Toys for Kids”, could not be done without the help of many.

Event Description:

Announcing the KPFT Holliday Meet and Greet with End Mass Incarceration Houston

Everyone wants to be at home with their families during the Holidays, especially if they have children. When a parent is behind bars it affects the innocent children that they can't be with.

For the past five years End Mass Incarceration Houston has been handing out hundreds of new toys to girls and boys on Christmas Eve when they come out of the Harris County Jail in downtown Houston after visiting an incarcerated parent.

End Mass Incarceration Houston is part of a nationwide coalition to end mass incarceration.

Please come out Saturday evening, December 16th, from 7pm until midnight, to El Che Cafe, 3100 McKinney St in East Downtown, for our annual holiday party meet-and-greet with staff and volunteers of KPFT and End Mass Incarceration Houston.

Come share in the holiday spirit and enjoy some local bands, snacks, and beverages, and if the spirit moves you, feel free to bring a new unwrapped toy to help brighten up Christmas Eve for a local child.

The music is going to be spectacular:

Hogan and Moss and the Old Weird America - 9pm

Torry Mercer and Deconstruction Crew - 8pm

DJ Fili Delgado and guests - Host of Voz de la Tierra on KPFT

Master of Ceremonies Hank Lamb - Host of The Prison Show

Event Name:
Christmas at the Jail 5
Venue:
1200 Baker St, Houston, TX 77002-1206, United States,
Event Description:

Having a parent behind bars is traumatic enough for children but to a young child at Christmas time it may be an emotional disaster. When children go into a jail to see their Mother or Father during the holidays, the very real potential for psychological scarring exists. Since 2013 a group of men, women and children have taken these kids, the most innocent victims of mass incarceration, into their hearts and their arms at Christmas time at the jails in Houston. They have donated time, money and energy to ensure these little people receive at least a little glimmer of happiness when they emerge from the repressive atmosphere of the Harris County Adult Detention Center. Walking out of the doors there, they see a crowd of smiling faces standing behind Santa Claus and a huge pile of presents. Watching the transformation on these small faces from sadness and confusion to wonder and pure joy changes the lives of all who experience it.
You are cordially invited to join us at the jail on Christmas Eve this year as we carry a message of hope and love to children whose loved ones were left behind. If you cannot join us but still want to help you can make a donation at www.hpjc.org and please be sure to note that the donation is for the Christmas at the Jail event. Snail mailers can send tax free donations to Houston Peace and Justice Center, PO Box 66234, Houston Texas 77266. There is much wrong in the world today, this is an opportunity to be a part of something which is clearly good and positive. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
