‘GOP Lawmakers Bear Responsibility’ for Mass Shooting at Texas Public School

‘While Too Early to Know What Motivated the Shooter, Republicans Are Responsible for Lax Gun Laws, Failure to Take Action that Would Save Lives’ Says HCDP Chair

Houston — A mass shooting at a Texas elementary school on Tuesday became the fourth-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, and “GOP lawmakers are to blame for the deaths of these innocent children to gun violence,” said Harris County Democratic Party Chair Odus Evbagharu.

“Republicans repeatedly ignore the gun violence epidemic in our country, and instead of helping to make our schools and communities safer, they pass laws that loosen gun restrictions and fail to protect our children from horrific, preventable tragedies like today’s deadly mass shooting.

“The 15 murders today are on the hands of the GOP. Republican lawmakers bear responsibility, and until they take action, we are vulnerable to more senseless violence,” Evbagharu said.

“It’s not only Republican-championed gun policy injuring and killing Texans. There are many other GOP policies negatively impacting the lives and livelihoods of people living in our state.

“Our irresponsible refusal of the Medicare Expansion to the Affordable Care Act sickens and kills thousands every year. Our lack of support for families creates latch-key kids who grow up unsupervised. One cannot claim to support family values when one does not value families.

“It is time to elect those who will value families going forward. While all Texans, irrespective of ideology and party, support humane policies, it is clear Republican politicians and their leadership do not. My heart aches for the families in pain from today’s horrific events — pain made more acute by knowing nothing will change in Texas while Republicans are still in office.”
