Harris County Democrats Call on Texas Governor to Schedule Special Session to Address State’s Lax Gun Laws
'Not Doing So Now Means All-Talk Abbott is Continuing to Fail the Very People He Was Elected to Protect,’ Says HCDP Chair
Houston — The Harris County Democratic Party today called for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to schedule a special legislative session to address the state’s lax gun laws. HCDP’s request follows the sixth mass shooting that has occurred in the seven-and-a-half years Abbott has been in office.
“Unlike in the past, today Gov. Abbott must take action,” said HCDP Chair Odus Evbagharu. “Not doing so now means ‘All-Talk Abbott’ is continuing to fail the very people he was elected to protect.
“We are sick and tired of our governor opposing any and every kind of gun safety legislation,” Evbagharu said. “Instead of supporting laws that help keep people safe, Abbott’s policy priorities are killing people.
“Since Gov. Abbott took office, child gun deaths in Texas have doubled. We must act now to protect our children and our communities. Protecting the lives of our future teachers, artists, tradespeople, leaders: This must be at the heart of our state’s gun legislation.
“There are steps we can take as a state — as a nation — to prevent gun violence,” he said. “Many of the proposals have had bi-partisan support in the past.
“We must reduce the easy access to dangerous weapons by implementing universal background checks and putting red-flag laws and safe storage laws in place.
“Lax gun laws are a critical problem, and our governor needs to address the epidemic of gun violence that continues to plague Texas and the nation.”
