Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s Plan B Remark is ‘Tone Deaf’ Solution for Rape, Incest Victims to Prevent Pregnancy

Governor’s Statement ‘Demonstrates Remarkable Cruelty, Absolute Fantasy,’ Says HCDP Chair

Houston — In defending the state’s draconian abortion laws last week, Texas Gov. Abbott said emergency contraception is the solution for rape and incest victims to prevent pregnancy — a statement that “demonstrates remarkable cruelty and absolute fantasy on the part of Texas’ current leader,” said Harris County Democratic Chair Odus Evbagharu.

In response to the governor’s remark, Harris County Democratic Party Chair Odus Evbagharu issued the following statement:

“Gov. Abbott's statement is both tone deaf and cruel and yet another example of how disconnected he is from the issues facing everyday Texans.

“Through speech and action, our current governor demonstrates little compassion or care. As he scrambles to remain in office, Abbott's focus is only on appeasing MAGA Republicans.

“Not everyone can ‘access health care immediately’ after being a victim of rape or incest. Not everyone has health coverage, especially in Texas, where one in four women of reproductive age is uninsured — largely due to the state's decision not to expand Medicaid.

“Not everyone has transportation to a pharmacy to purchase emergency contraception, and not everyone can afford the extra expense.

“Gov. Abbott continues to prove that he is unfit to lead Texas. His statement about emergency contraception is only the latest example of the cruel policy he champions.

“In the last year, Gov. Abbott has pushed to deny undocumented kids a public education, to deny baby formula to migrant children in U.S. custody, to investigate gender-affirming care for transgender youth as child abuse.”

“With both policy and pontification, Gov. Abbott continues to show his true self: a backward, cruel, homophobic, xenophobic leader hell-bent on holding on to power at any cost.

“The people of Texas deserve so much more than this.”
