Texas State Sen. Alvarado Announces Intention to Filibuster Voter Suppression Bill
She's 'Using Any Means Available to Ensure the People’s Voice is Not Silenced,’ Says HCDP Chair
Texas State Sen. Carol Alvarado on Wednesday announced her plan to filibuster Senate Bill 1, legislation that would amend the state’s election code, creating new limitations and hurdles to voting.
HCDP Chair Odus Evbagharu made this statement following Alvarado’s announcement:
“Sen. Alvarado is an amazing leader, a strong Latina standing up for rights, like Dolores Huerta, Yolanda Black Navarro, Sonia Sotomayor and others who have fought to uphold our fragile democracy.”
“Voting rights are under attack here in Texas and across the nation,” Evbagharu said. “Sen. Alvarado is making sacrifices and using any means available to ensure the people’s voice is not silenced.
"In the end we may not be able to stop this bill at all," Alvarado wrote in an email to Texans. "But I rise to speak against the bill because it is the right thing to do for my constituents."
